St Jacob

Jacob Schultz built the first house in St. Jacob. He made his money by selling whiskey by the gallon. In 1849 Jacob Schroth bought land near Schultz’ farm and built a small house. He expanded it to include a store and a saloon in what was called St. Jacob’s House. When the first post office was established in June 1851, the town was named St. Jacob after the two earliest founders of the town. It was platted in 1866 and organized into a village on November 2, 1875. The Vandalia Railroad was completed to St. Jacob in 1868.

Troy

John Jarvis acquired the land for the town of Troy from the federal government on September 10, 1814. The town was first called Columbia prior to 1819. James Riggin and David Hendershott purchased 10 acres from John Jarvis for $10 per acre. Riggin and Hendershott surveyed tracts of land for the town of Troy. Riggin is credited with naming the town Troy.
