Montrose
J.B. Johnson laid out the village of Montrose. Calvin Mitchell, the county surveyor, platted the land in 1870. Montrose grew and prospered because of its location on the Vandalia Railroad and the National Road. It is located in St. Francis Township.

Jewett
The town of Jewett was named after a Mr. Jewett who came to the area from Ohio. Four towns in four states are named after him. The village was laid out in 1870. Railroad workers built the single-track Vandalia Railroad through Jewett 1868-69. The Pennsylvania Railroad acquired the Vandalia Railroad and in 1926, it ran another track through the village. The depot was built around 1896. It was purchased by an individual in 1968 and moved southwest of its original location. It is currently a home.
