FREE LOAN KITS
Loan kits are “museums in a box” containing a teacher’s curriculum guide, artifacts, reproductions, and activities for students. Share the loan kits with your colleagues for a comprehensive unit without leaving the classroom.
The following loan kits are currently under construction:
- Native Americans of Effingham County-including the Delawares, Kickapoos, and Winnebagoes. The kit contains information about 10,000 years of pre-history when Native Americans inhabited Effingham County.
- Pioneer Life in Effingham County- This kit helps the students develop an appreciation of how life was for the pioneer ancestors dating back to the 1830s. The kit also contains information about Griffin Tipsword, the first
white settler in Effingham County. Many of the names of the earliest settler families are included.
- Exploring the Branches of Your Family Tree- This kit includes family record charts, a glossary of terms, worksheets, games, and “how to” information to get the children’s genealogy research started.
- The National Road- This was America’s first road into the wilderness. It is a brief history of how the road came about, who traveled it, interesting stories about it, etc. 2006 is the 200th anniversary of legislation passed in Washington to begin construction of the Road.
- The Architecture of Effingham County- This kit includes a simple guide to architectural styles of public buildings and private homes for the students to identify. It allows the students to put the architectural styles into their proper historical periods.
Note: Each loan kit requires completion of an outcome based evaluation form from participating teachers. Please help us collect this vital information.
To check out loan kits contact the Effingham County and National Road Museum Association at 342-6280 or
